MySpace and Facebook

Now down to a bit of “social networking” and I thought I would really love Facebook and MySpace. I could see myself registering and connecting with other staff members from school. I felt that mastering Flickr and managing to place my photos out there was quite a mean feat and this was the next progressive step! But alas this is not for me!

I love the idea of catching-up with others on a regular basis. After all people sharing a common interest with one another, meeting to discuss and communicate those interests is what we do every day in one form or another! But I believe this is just another way of achieving that need to network that I can live without.

At school and in libraries the applications for this form of exchange can undoubtedly be put to ‘good practice’. Teacher-librarians are often concerned with disseminating the library information that we lose sight of our users at times. Persuading our teens to participate actively rather than passively in this form of networking will take libraries, especially school libraries to a new level.

On a personal note I loved the fact that I could locate staff members (past and present) on MySpace promoting their band 4thwall. Checkout this link to David Lee King’s articles on passive invitations. Some fantastic ideas - take a look!
